WideVPN Review 2025: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?

WideVPN Overview

WideVPN previously operated as VPNTraffic, a discontinued VPN service that continues to accept payments without offering refunds. With such a shady history, I wanted to know whether a VPN with a new name could compete with top VPN services. To find out, I gauged the VPN on several factors like speed, streaming, server network, and customer to determine if it would prove my low expectations wrong.

It wasn’t long before I realized that WideVPN had many shortcomings, like not being able to access most content and having a small network of available servers. While it deploys the innovative WireGuard protocol and is relatively cheap, it does not provide fast speeds, and it lacks native client software, which could put off novice VPN s. If you’re looking for a reputable VPN that you can trust, check out the list of the most reliable VPNs on the market.

WideVPN does not offer a free version or a money-back guarantee, so you cannot try its service for free. However, all plans are very affordable and offer enterprise-grade security, multiple secure protocols, and unlimited data.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

WideVPN Unblocks US Netflix and BBC iPlayer (But Can’t Access Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max)

Streaming local content is one of the major functions expected of any VPN, but WideVPN barely fulfills this purpose. I was disappointed when I discovered that none of WideVPN’s servers the most popular streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max. It only allowed me to access US Netflix, and my colleague in the UK was able to access BBC iPlayer. WideVPN also couldn’t play every video in HD and had frequent drops in video quality.

US Netflix and BBC iPlayer: Unblocked

WideVPN could access US Netflix libraries without any problems. I tested the Mammasa, Chicago, and Kansas servers while trying to access US Netflix, and the Chicago server proved to be the most unreliable out of the three. However, I could access my American Netflix library easily enough with all the other US servers.

WideVPN had no trouble accessing US Netflix, but I experienced some lag while testing it out. I also encountered a lot of hiccups when I watched the movies Bird Box and Yara.

Screenshot of WideVPN unblocking US Netflix

I was able to access US Netflix’s library using three different WideVPN servers

The BBC iPlayer contains a wealth of British entertainment, but you will not be able to access it if you are located outside the UK. If you need to access your while away from the UK, WideVPN provides a reliable solution for watching your favorite BBC programs.

It was possible to watch BBC iPlayer streams but with some lagging

As WideVPN’s speeds are not sufficient to consistent HD streaming, you may experience some buffering and slowdown when streaming.

Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and HBO Max: Blocked

Despite WideVPN being a company with extensive cybersecurity experience, I was disappointed to find that I was unable to access most of the streaming platforms I tested. I tried every server available yet my attempts to access Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+, and Hulu were stumped.

I successfully logged into Amazon Prime Video, but when I clicked the play button I repeatedly got an error message. I experienced this with all the US servers I tested. I also faced similar difficulties when I tried to access Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max.

Your device is connected to the Internet using a VPN or proxy service.

WideVPN is mostly useful for accessing US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but it doesn’t offer much else. It doesn’t openly its streaming capabilities, so I didn’t find it particularly shocking. The market offers several better options if you need a VPN for streaming, — I recommend CyberGhost to unblock platforms and stream without interruption.

Speed

- 3.0 / 10

Slow And Unreliable Connection Speeds

There was a noticeable drop in the speed of my internet connection on both nearby and distant servers. When I watched my favorite shows, I experienced significant buffering due to the slow internet speeds. Because there are no native clients, setting this VPN up and using it can be complex and time-consuming for a novice, however, the website outlines instructions for installation.

Speed Test Results

I had an average connection speed of 6.55Mbps when connected to WideVPN servers, which was 92% slower than my base internet speed. These results are significantly below average and do not meet expectations.

As a baseline, I ran a speed test without being connected to the VPN and recorded a benchmark speed of 82.87Mbps. After that, I tested WideVPN’s servers located in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia to determine the average VPN speed.

Screenshot of speed test results while using WideVPN

WideVPN speed test results dropped significantly across all servers tested

While speeds decreased marginally across locations, the ping response time increased across locations. The fastest I could get was 12.69Mbps on a Canada server, while the slowest was 2.50Mbps on a UK server.

Similarly, and speeds were noticeably slower on a US local server. Long-distance connections reduced my internet speed even more. There was an overall lack of consistency in the speeds and they were well below average.

ExpressVPN has the fastest average speed across all locations tested. The results remain constant across ExpressVPN’s server network, which is spread across 105 different countries.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content s, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 4.0 / 10

Server Network — Limited Server Coverage

WideVPN has a limited number of servers, but the few ones it has are strategically located in some of the world’s most popular areas. This means that despite the few servers, there will usually be one near you to give you access to the content you want.

The company running WideVPN is called Amplusnet SRL and is located in Romania. I discovered that it has 40 servers spread over 32 countries, which can cause server overload when the network gets busy. I noticed a considerable fluctuation in the network strength across different servers and had some trouble connecting to a lot of them, especially US, UK, Spain, and servers.

Screenshot of server locations available on WideVPN

There are only a few server locations, but WideVPN covers the most popular regions

CyberGhost provides you with access to more than 9,757 servers across 100 countries, allowing you to connect to the most appropriate VPN server location depending on your particular interests.

Security — Bare-Bones Security Features

WideVPN claims to be equipped with a strong security infrastructure that makes sure your data is protected. It claims to offer enterprise-grade security but does not provide any information regarding the type of encryption it uses to secure data. I tried to find out the type of encryption used from the team, but there was no response.

The website s enterprise-grade security, so it is likely that it uses AES-128 or AES-256 bit encryption. Furthermore, the service s PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, IKEV2, OpenVPN, and the highly recommended WireGuard protocol.

Among its shortcomings is the lack of a kill switch feature, which may have an adverse impact on your browsing experience. The lack of a kill switch means you won’t be disconnected from the internet if your VPN stops working, which puts you at risk of exposing your IP address.

To find out if WideVPN’s DNS leak protection is effective, I ran a few leak tests. My tests with servers in the US, UK, Australia, and did not reveal any leaks. My DNS requests not only went through WideVPN’s server but my personal IP was masked at the same time.

Screenshot of leak test results while using WideVPN

Results of a DNS/IP leak test conducted on a WideVPN server

My tests also did not reveal WebRTC leaks, but I can’t whether WideVPN has WebRTC leak protection since that information is lacking on its site and applications.

Privacy — Keeps Zero Traffic Logs

WideVPN was very clear about its no-logging policy, and its were generally positive with the exception of storing information and web cookies. The company did not give the reader pages upon pages of obscure jargon; instead, it incorporated everything it had to say in a few paragraphs.

According to the , it does not save IP addresses, DNS requests, traffic, bandwidth, or data transfers. It further adds that no activity is logged or monitored. In other words, your activities while connected to the VPN are completely anonymous and not logged or monitored by the company.

Its no-logs policy is not as strict as those of other VPNs I have tried since it does store some anonymized data (such as payment data, Google analytics data, and data). Fortunately, the information is handled anonymously and cannot be connected to your personal information. The information is only used to improve the VPN and analyze its performance.

Screenshot of an excerpt from WideVPN's privacy statement

VPNArea’s is absolutely clear about the fact that no logs are kept

WideVPN’s headquarters is in Romania, which is great for privacy as it is not a member of any information-sharing alliances. All in all, WideVPN does a decent job of concealing your real location and does not lie about the information it collects.

Torrenting — I Don’t Advice Torrenting with WideVPN

Despite WideVPN’s for torrenting, the lack of security features like split tunneling and kill switch makes it unsafe and inefficient. Additionally, its throttled speeds render it unusable for torrenting large files.

ExpressVPN’s underlying stealth technology gives you complete freedom to torrents without worrying about cyber-spying or slowdowns. Keep in mind that my team and I don’t condone illegal torrenting so be sure to consider your local laws and never copyrighted files without permission.

Does WideVPN Work in China? Yes, but Not Recommended!

Although WideVPN claims to work in China, the company does not emphasize this important benefit in its marketing.

The team didn’t provide a detailed answer to my email about this, so I cannot categorically say that it works. According to the representative, I must use one of the Wireguard servers to access content and services in China. However, there’s little to no evidence to back up the claim that WideVPN will work in censored regions. The provider doesn’t have any obfuscation tools to get around the Chinese government’s censorship.

VPNs with well-designed and dedicated obfuscation technology are the only ones that have any hope of working in censored regions. ExpressVPN is a reliable option that works in censored countries like China. Please keep in mind that the protection of a VPN doesn’t give you a license to commit illegal acts, so please exercise a basic level of caution when using a VPN in China.

Experience

- 3.0 / 10

Simultaneous Device Connections — 2 to 7 Devices Per License

Depending on the length of your subscription, you can use the same WideVPN on up to 7 devices. That’s great news for you if you have a large family or want to share with friends. I tested it on 2 of my devices with the 1-month subscription, and there was no difference in speed, even when streaming and browsing at the same time.

There is no standard for how many simultaneous connections VPN providers allow, and providers are free to set their own limits. However, 7 is a decent number that will cover the use case scenarios for most s.

Device Compatibility — Only Available Through Third-Party Apps

WideVPN works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iPhones, iPads, and Android-based devices. However, since it does not offer its own VPN client, you need to manually set it up. The VPN offers guides to get it running on Windows, iOS, Android, Mac, Ubuntu, and Linux.

Worse still, you cannot use it on routers, streaming devices (Apple TV, Roku, etc.), or gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, etc.). Web browser extensions are also not available. While it covers a range of popular devices, having to set the app up through third-party apps can be tedious and isn’t nearly as easy as plug-and-play VPNs.

Ease of Setup & Installation — Unfriendly Setup

WideVPN does not have native clients so you will need to the server configuration files from the client area of the website. You will need to do this in conjunction with third-party programs like AnyConnect, WireGuard app, and OpenVPN Connect app.

Because of its complicated setup, I would not recommend this VPN to beginners or novice s. If you don’t mind a more technical setup, there are detailed instructions on how to do this on the website — it will just take a little more time and know-how compared to ing a dedicated application. I was able to set up the OpenVPN and Wireguard configuration files by following the instructions on WideVPN’s website and installing third-party solutions compatible with OpenVPN and Wireguard on my Windows computer.

It required some technical knowledge to set up WideVPN manually

The setup speed may vary based on the type of device and protocol selected. WireGuard for iOS will take longer to set up than OpenVPN because the OpenVPN Connect app makes it easier to get started.

The knowledge base provides setup guides and frequently asked questions. If you’d prefer to speak directly with a customer agent, you can reach out via a form or WhatsApp message.

Steps to Using WideVPN on macOS:

  1. OpenVPN Connect Client. It is necessary to first OpenVPN Connect, a free open-source client for OpenVPN.

  2. Install the VPN client. The setup wizard will guide you through the process of installing the client.

  3. OpenVPN configuration files. To create server profiles, the client needs these configuration files. They can be found in the setup section of your dashboard.

  4. Import the configuration files. After ing the configuration files, extract them from the ZIP file, and then import them individually into the OpenVPN client.

- 2.0 / 10

Largely, WideVPN has virtually non-existent customer , leaving you to find solutions to issues and inquiries on your own. You can reach through Telegram, WhatsApp, or a ticket system. With the ticketing system, you can’t submit a request without entering the captcha value, which sadly never displays. This meant that I had no means of ing for urgent technical and connection problems.

Although simple to use, the ticket system doesn’t adequately for the urgency of the request. I got a confirmation email of the ticket being received soon after I successfully created it, but I didn’t get an actual response to my query even after waiting several days.

I further attempted to the team via its Whatsapp and, despite getting a response within 6 hours, the answers were perfunctory and far from explanatory. Most of my queries were ignored, and it seemed like they were only interested enough to give me the bare minimum of an answer.

WideVPN provided no helpful information

Basic technical is available through its Setup Guides and Frequently Asked Questions in the Help Center section of the website. ittedly, its help center is simple to use and offers detailed answers, but there’s nothing like receiving live from a real person. Other top VPNs have undoubtedly provided me with far superior customer service.

How We Test Customer and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer should be important to you.

Pricing

- 8.0 / 10

The pricing is a feature that I found pleasantly surprising, placing it among one of the most affordable VPNs I’ve ever tested. WideVPN offers you three options to pick from, each with a different subscription length and a varied number of connections ed at once. All of the plans come with enterprise-grade security, multiple secure protocols, double VPN, and unlimited data, speed, and bandwidth.

The 1-month plan is the shortest, and it allows 2 simultaneous VPN connections at most. The 1-year plan is next and it s up to 7 VPN connections at once. This is followed by the longest subscription, which lasts for 2 years and s up to 7 simultaneous connections.

You have the option of paying with credit/debit cards, Alipay, PayPal, various cryptocurrencies, and more than 200 other payment methods. Sadly, it doesn’t offer a free trial or a guarantee to refund your money if you’re not entirely pleased with its services.

If you are looking for a VPN on a tight budget, we have compiled a list of the best monthly VPN options for you. You can enjoy unparalleled online freedom and security by taking advantage of the rock-solid money-back guarantee offered by these VPNs.

WideVPN has the following offers

Final Verdict

I would not recommend WideVPN. It has the feel of a beta product and is consistently subpar in almost every aspect compared to competing options on the market. Though it is relatively affordable and safe, it is not as advanced as other VPN services. Operationally, the service fails to meet expectations, and its configuration is not easy to set up, especially for s who are new to VPNs.

A few other significant drawbacks of the service are its slow speeds, lack of proper for streaming and torrenting, poor customer service, and the lack of a money-back guarantee. If it wants to appeal to beginners, it should also consider releasing -friendly native apps. Despite these overwhelming drawbacks, there are a few positive features like its affordable prices, cryptocurrency , and for the Wireguard protocol.

WideVPN can work for web browsing, but it lacks many of the features I would like to see in a VPN. You cannot go wrong with ExpressVPN if you’re looking for a VPN that provides smooth server speeds, security smarts, supreme ease of use, 24/7 customer , and independent auditing. You can test ExpressVPN out for yourself and if you’re not satisfied, you have up to 30 days to claim a refund.

FAQs About WideVPN

Is WideVPN good?

No, it doesn’t stand out among other VPNs. Its encryption and choice of protocols are good, the price is quite affordable, and it doesn’t store your activity logs. However, it lacks apps for most major operating systems, only has a few servers, and lacks various advanced security features such as a kill switch and port forwarding.

Can I use WideVPN for free?

No, WideVPN does not offer free trials. It also doesn’t offer any money-back guarantees for any of its three packages, so you can’t test the service out before you decide to make a purchase.

If you are not satisfied with WideVPN, you could try one of these recommended free VPNs. Unfortunately, free VPNs aren’t as secure as paid VPNs and offer fewer server options, slower speeds, and less privacy. Free VPNs often collect your personal data and sell them to other companies for a profit.

Is WideVPN really safe?

Yes, WideVPN allows you to protect your privacy and browse the internet anonymously and securely. It has also taken great care to ensure that your online activities are not monitored and that they remain private. It achieved this by implementing top security protocols such as OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, PPTP, and Wireguard.
